About the Course
Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. The diagnoses and procedure codes are taken from medical record documentation, such as transcription of physician's notes, laboratory and radiologic results, etc. Medical coding professionals help ensure the codes are applied correctly during the medical billing process, which includes abstracting the information from documentation, assigning the appropriate codes, and creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers.
Who Can do Medical Coding?
There is no set of educational requirement for entry into medical coding , however a strong knowledge of biology, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology would be a distinct advantage. They suggest that most employers require a high school diploma or equivalent and would prefer candidates with at least a year of study beyond high school. In some cases, medical coding specialists could be trained entirely on the job. This would be of particular relevance to those with a strong science or medical background or experience in other areas of health information management. Relevant skills in carrying out this work would include strong analytical skills, being detail-oriented, being comfortable in independent working and decision-making and having strong computer skills.
